What are the benefits of cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy treats a wide range of bodily issues from muscle, skin, and energy and mood problems. Forms of cold therapy has been around for generations. Recently new cryo locations are opening all over the world. There are large distributors in the US and Europe. Research has shown that cryotherapy provides both immediate and long- term results, depending on the frequency of use. To achieve the best long-term results, complete at least 10 sessions over 2 to 3 weeks. As a quick view of cryotherapy’s benefits, here is a list ordered by function.

Physical effects

Reduced inflammation: When the user steps into a cryochamber, they are engulfed with the cold liquid nitrogen that soon reaches below- freezing temperatures (under -200 degrees!). Like the effect of an ice bath, the chamber soothes muscles and aching joints. Cold temperatures decrease inflammation by triggering a reduction in blood flow. Anti- inflammatory molecules are then released to the inflamed area.

Reduced pain: The decrease in blood flow by constricting arteries and veins also reduces pain to the affected area. It is best to use cryotherapy treatment within a day or two of an injury. The cold will numb these areas during treatment thus leading to:

Faster recovery: To get a patient moving again, it is important to treat injuries right away and begin the healing process. Reduced pain and inflammation helps internally, and encourages the user to keep up with their activities.

Helps treat: Fibromyalgia, arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, sore muscles, aches/ pains, pain in joints and tendons

Effects on mood and energy

Serotonin/ melatonin; endorphin release: During treatment, the body releases endorphins, or “feel- good” hormones, into your system. This release of endorphins is a survival tactic so that the body does not as easily shut down. It may sound scary that this is going on; but, the body is doing the right thing. The treatment is not long enough to cause harm such as frostbite. Provided the user follows safety protocols like wearing the correct gear.

Increased energy/ Euphoric feeling: The energized feeling caused by the release of endorphins can last up to 6–8 hours. Not only are the endorphins released, but the blood flow that was reduced during the cold treatment is reversed. Blood rushes back to the extremities, which has an invigorating effect on the body.

Better sleep: The body went through an unusual process. So, the release of endorphins is followed by a greater ability to sleep in some cases.

Helps treat: anxiety

On top of these benefits, there are positive effects on skin. This includes collagen production, tightened skin cells, and reduced wrinkles. Thus, it creates an anti- aging effect on the skin. Cryotherapy used for skin conditions can help treat eczema, psoriasis, cellulite, and acne.

Cryotherapy provides a treatment for a wide range of pain, diseases, and bodily issues. Whether an athlete, chiropractic or physical therapy patient, or spa enthusiast, these many benefits should encourage anyone to try the treatment to experience its effects on the body and mind.
